Paul Scott joins forces with original Montana member Ken Stewart (Mr Blonde) for The THE GRONKS project. They proudly announce the completion of their first album, CATS AND DOGS.

If music was food this would be a bucket of fried chicken followed by a double serve of double choc washed down by a bottle of tequila. Tasty!

 >> What's a Gronk? Powerpopaholic review
POWERPOPAHOLIC

Yeah, I know the question. What the hell is a Gronk? Well the short answer is this band named after an obscure comic book villain.
The long answer is there is a bunch of other references to the word "Gronk" across the wiki-verse.
But for our purposes, it's an Aussie band that clings to the geeky, quirky and melodic.
Opening with "Dirt" that resemble a Devo meets Ween guitar antics and a simple beat.
There are bits of Pink Floyd and Midnight Oil you'll hear on "Tribeca" and it's pretty catchy too.
The album's songs all have the harmonies and hooks that power pop fans will cling too.
"Touch the Sun" is a cleaner Guided By Voices-like track that hums along in an 80's like fashion.
And "Pot O Gold" has a shimmering dreamy quality that evokes great 60's psyche pop like The Move and The Nazz.
My favorite song here is "Robot" which references The Ramones, GBV and has a solid hook full of great effects.
The very XTC like "Suicide and Fine Wine" is a welcome surprise here.
In addition, a sweet Beatlesque "la-la" chorus finds it's way on "Birds Buzzin."
Another band to use for comparison here is The Lucky Bishops with less guitar fuzziness and more "Gronkiness."
Most songs here shine (other than the snoozer "Language") and worthy of your ipod playlist.
Get it and may the Gronk be with you.

 >> On the studio floor..
We've spent most of February & March in the Damien Gerard studio with Andy & Jez from Farrah (working under their production moniker of 'Just A Noise') recording the new Montana release. Various overdubs & studio trickery continue at the Static Attractor before the tracks are mixed by the aforementioned J.A.N. at Lazy Bones in London. We had a brillaint time & I could go on & on about what microphones were used & how a 'snake' is sometimes called a 'Gypsy Roll' & that one should try never to get the two confused... but here's some nice moody photos taken by the very talented Craig Hansen instead... cheers!
 >> The things people say...
like, for example, nice things about our album in the U.K. press..
AMERICANA:UK
These are the sort of songs that you can sing along to before they are even finished,
and beneath the glittering glossy patina of visceral pop beats a heart of
experimentation. The opening sugar rush of ?Good Goes Bad? and ?MTV? would make
your teeth ache if they were repeated ad nauseum, but wonderfully though, they
subvert themselves with ?Stalki Blues? and especially ?Wait,? songs that are more
substantial and savoury with a more twisted experimental sound.
They meander in these skewed pools, riding ripples of melancholy, grasping for the
secret of pop perfection, knowing that setting is everything because they unleash
the orgasm of melody and harmony that is ?Summerscool? - forget the experimenting;
here is the craft, the guitars fawning over the vocals as they leave
Big Star for the Beach Boys.
You can certainly understand why these Australians are starting to appear on TV and
film soundtracks. They are like a self-contained ?Garden State? and like the Shins,
they won?t change your life but they will brighten the corners of it for a while. They
even stomp all over themselves as they scuff up ?Rejected? going for that
authentic dirty finish, grit instead of polish, no longer summery songs but a rocking
swaggering version of Eddie and the Hot Rods.
They manage to do anything that they want to do and produce songs that either have an
immediate impact or those that grow and blossom in your mind, and it is that
which makes this an enduring pleasure.

LEICESTER BANGS
Montana - Starsign: Tarantula (Lojinx)
Catch this jewel from Sydney band Montana. Lead singer, Paul Scott describes the
band?s sound as ?Supergrass meets Brendan Benson on holiday in Montana with jangly
guitars?. Like the ?Grass, they are tight and melodic. Like a holiday in Montana
they are a breath of fresh air. There?s a polish to this album that shines through in
tracks like ?Rejected? and the catchy ?MTV?. Five new songs are tagged on to the
European release of the album and ?Wide Eyed Boy? provides one of the highlights.
The band has featured on Channel Five?s Tripping Over and, whatever they say in
their song, the MTV rotation must come soon.

 >> Motel Kalifornia
Well Pat 'n I are back from L.A. one last nifty acoustic show at the HotelCafe & two days kicking back in West Hollywood buying rock teeshirts eating mexican for breakfast, dinner & supper & generally laughing our arses off, thanks to Alexander Lawrence who showed us the way to a damn fine time.
 >> Release The Bats!
well here we are in Merry Olde England - played an acoustic show at the Claerndon Castle in Camden on Wednesday & our first electric gig at the Dublin Castle in Camden on the Thursday - thanks to London band Mustard who lent us most (make that ALL) of their gear.. it was a cracking show & eerr bloody loud. With Michelle up in York or something at a wedding it looked like being a quiet weekend of beer drinking & sight seeing (well the inside of pubs can be quite scenic..) until we scored an unscheduled show with Part Chimp at the Crypt - yes that's an actual crypt under an actual church in sarf London - Andrew from the Mandarins was drafted in on bass & we were onstage at nine.. now I thought the Dublin Castle was loud but my ears are still ringing from the Crypt show & that was two days ago.. many thanks to Andrew who didn't play a single wrong note, the lads from Part Chimp (who totally rock) and Annie the Crypt promoter ..the after show party was a blast.. OK I'd better go & wash my filthy clothes ..oh the glamour of it all..
 >> Do you want me to erase that?
The new Montana line up has been in the studio with our fave engineer Russell Pilling recording tracks for our new Australian album "Firesale". We're 10 tracks in to what will be a 12-track disc and I'm WELL pleased with the results - it will hopefully be available later in the year.
